UP Review: Pixar Is Up, Up And Away With A Film Deserves The Animated Film Oscar Plus!

Short Version Aggregate Review: UP is arguably Pixar’s finest achievement to date, and is surprisingly mature (and moving) in its subject matter, and the 3D visuals are pretty awesome too. (Emphasis added mine: Get out The Oscar And Engrave it now! Pixar Is Up, Up And Away With A Film Deserves The Animated Film Oscar Plus nomination for screen play and musical score.)

Despite a couple of misguided reviewers at Rotten Tomatoes, UP leads the way with a 98% that was backed up with a $68,200,000 box office this weekend. if Ratatouille and Wall-E deserved to be in the running for Best Picture of the Year (as many said they did at the times of their releases) then UP certainly does.

From Disney/Pixar comes "Up," a comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 9-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell.

Disney and Pixar have cause to celebrate about this film! The 10th feature film from the Pixar filmmakers, Up, was selected to open the prestigious 62nd Festival de Cannes on Wednesday, May 13th. Cannes and Disney/Pixar are breaking new ground as this will be the first time ever a 3-D animated film has been awarded the coveted opening night spot. Up, which will be shown in Disney Digital 3-D, also marks the first time a Disney movie has opened the festival. Up was directed by Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.) and follows the adventures of a 78 year old balloon salesman who ties balloons to his house in order to travel to the wilds of South America.

In a statement issued by Disney/Pixar, John Lasseter, chief creative officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, said of the honor: "We are absolutely thrilled that the Cannes Film Festival has chosen Up to be its prestigious opening night offering. This is a huge step for animation, and further supports our belief that a great animated film is simply a great film. Pete Docter, the director of Up, and the amazing team of artists, animators, technicians, and storytellers at Pixar have worked so hard to create a great motion picture that is impressively fresh, funny, and powerfully emotional." Local reviewers in the DC area media have called it an “adult animated films for kids and a kids animated film for adults”, and that about hits the nail on the head.

Pixar’s latest summer offering, UP, is a fantastic film. Simply fantastic. Seriously, if Ratatouille and Wall-E deserved to be in the running for Best Picture of the Year (as many said they did at the times of their releases) then UP certainly does.

It’s that good.

The film - which was written by Bob Peterson (Finding Nemo, Ratatouille) and directed by Peter Docter (Monsters, Inc.) - delivers all the things we’ve come to expect from a Pixar animated feature: gorgeous visuals, a strong story rife with moral lessons and (gasp) good character development; humor both low-brow (for the kids) and high-brow (for the grownups), with strokes of bold wit and a dash of sagely wisdom for good measure.

And yet, UP also delivers something quite unexpected: Pixar’s most adult-oriented story yet, slyly disguised in a fantastic adventure tale.

UP tells the life story of Carl Fredricksen (the unmistakable voice of Ed Asner), a shy little boy who grows up in (1930?’s) America, an era in which people pack into movie theaters to watch news reels about adventurous explorers like Charles Muntz, who travels the world on one epic quest after the next.

Young Carl Fredricksen idolizes Muntz: He spends his lonely days roaming his neighborhood pretending to be Muntz until one day he runs into Ellie, an energetic and fearless young girl (everything Carl is not) who idolizes Charles Muntz just as much as Carl does. Ellie and Carl cross their hearts then and there and swear to be great adventurers like Charles Muntz; and with that oath, theirs is a match made in heaven.

After that fateful first encounter, we get a truly beautiful montage of Carl and Ellie’s life-long romance. We see the young kids grow into a teenage couple; see them get married and buy a house, working day jobs (balloon vendor) while saving up for the kind of adventures they fantasized about as kids. We watch the couple deal with the ups and downs, joys and tragedies of life; and gradually we watch them grow into old age, Ellie’s “My Adventures” scrapbook still unfilled, even as her time on Earth ends.

With Ellie gone, Carl becomes a disgruntled old man desperately trying to hold on to a house, heirlooms and a lost-love he cherishes. A physical confrontation with neighborhood developers leads to Carl being forced into a retirement home for the rest of his days - but before the old man will give in he decides to honor the oath he and Ellie swore as kids and take one last shot at adventure! Carl ties an impossible number of balloons to his house (working a balloon cart at the zoo was his job for many years), rigs a steering system and UP he goes and 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America.

Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, (Jordan Nagai), a young boy scout-type, a wilderness, 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip desperately trying to earn his last merit badge assisting the elderly, for personal reasons that are as moving as a they are heartbreakingly naive. From that point on, the story mainly focuses on Carl trying to find room in his broken heart for love and friendship again, with Russell acting as his primary foil and simultaneous source of inspiration. Russell is also handy for providing the comedic relief the kids will get.

Of course there’s a whole flying to South America, evil nemesis (Christopher Plummer), talking dogs/mythical bird adventure thrown in there. All of that stuff is pretty cool, and will be sure to entertain the kids. However, as one of the grownup kids, the story (for me) was all about Carl dealing with his profound sense of loss and love. The flying house escapism, fantastic creatures and evil villains were all just means and metaphors for that awesome emotional narrative.

No lie, there were a lot of sobs and sniffles in the theater. If you’re old enough to know about love and loss, it’s hard not to be affected by UP. By now it’s no secret that Pixar knows how to tell a fantastic story, but who knew they could handle romantic drama so well? Superb work.

“Visually, UP is just as stunning. The digital 3D tech employed for this film is far from a gimmick - it enhances the experience of the film by multitudes. When Carl and Russell are walking over cliffs or trekking through gorgeously rendered South American jungles, with an enormous floating 3D house harnessed to their backs, it’s not just some of the most gorgeous eye-candy seen onscreen (the balloons are truly amazing), it’s also a very clever and potent metaphor for grief. Rendered in 3D, those themes stood out loud and clear; the rest of the time, this movie was just a treat to look at.”

Robert Wilonsky of The Village Voice says that the trailer sells the film short:

That is not to fault the trailer, loaded with pretty pictures and pratfalls intended to woo the wee ones. But it doesn't prepare you for the emotional punch of Up's first few minutes, when it presents the most heartfelt -- the most sincere -- love story in recent memory: the love between a boy and a girl, who become a man and a woman, who become a husband and a wife, who become a widower and a memory that haunts the rest of what follows. The first 10 minutes of Up are flawless; the final 80 minutes, close enough

Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly talked about some of the artistic elements:

Michael Giacchino's gorgeous music, invoking great Max Steiner scores from the '40s and '50s, steers the story's emotional shifts with great elegance. The renderings, the color palette, the small and generous jokes, the perspective as balloons lift a whole house in the air -- all are breathtaking.

There were some differences in opinion, however, regarding the merits of seeing the film in 3-D. David Edelstein of New York Magazine urged viewers to take advantage:

By all means, see Up in its 3-D incarnation: The cliff drops are vertiginous, and the scores of balloons -- bunched into the shape of one giant balloon -- are as pluckable as grapes. The dogfight with canine pilots would have brought a salute from the late Charles M. Schulz.

Wilonsky disagreed:

Do not see Up in 3-D. It's inessential to the tale and altogether distracting.

He learns the truth about friendship, family and having no choice but to be who he really is, a rat who wants to be a chef.Nearly all (maybe all) of Pixar's feature films have the number "A113" in them somewhere (most recently the train in Cars). Also, there's often the ball from Luxo Jr. in there (it can be seen in Jack-Jack Attack on the Incredibles DVD, for instance). Look for A113 in Ratatouille! (rumor has it A113 is the classroom number at the Californian college where many Pixar animators learned their trade).

Popular and critical reaction

Ratatouille has opened to near-universal acclaim. As of July 1, 2007 it is 95% 'fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes, 9.0 on the Internet Movie Database with 4,067 votes, and 95/100 on Metacritic (the sixth highest Metacritic film rating ever and highest for Pixar).

Box Office

The film debuted at $47 million in estimated weekend sales, making it number one at the box office. Compared to other Pixar movies, the opening weekend was the lowest grossing since A Bug's Life.

Production

Jan Pinkava came up with the concept and directed the film from 2000, creating the original sets and characters. Pixar management replaced him with Bird in 2005. Bird was attracted to the film because of the outlandishness of the concept and the conflict that drove it: that kitchens feared rats, yet a rat wanted to work in one.

Bird was also delighted that the film was a highly physical comedy, with the character of Linguini providing endless fun for the animators. Bird rewrote the story with Gusteau killed off and gave larger roles to Skinner and Collette, and also changed the appearance of the rats to be less human-looking.

Because Ratatouille is intended to be a romantic, lush vision of Paris, giving it an identity distinct from previous Pixar films, the crew spent a week in the city to properly understand its environment, taking a motorcycle tour and eating at five top restaurants. There are also many water-based sequences in the film, one of which is set in the sewers and ten times more complex than the blue whale scene in Finding Nemo.

One scene has Linguini wet after jumping into the Seine to fetch Remy. A Pixar employee (ShadePaint Dept Coordinator Kesten Migdal) in a chef suit jumped into a swimming pool to see which parts of the suit stuck to his body and which became translucent from water absorption.

Ratatouille (film)In an interview, John Lasseter described the movie: "It is about a rat that wants to be a fine chef in a top French restaurant in Paris. It is a wonderful story about following your passions when all the world is against you. A rat to a kitchen is death; a kitchen to a rat is death."

Meet the Robinsons is a computer-animated film and the 46th animated feature produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

In the United Kingdom, the 3D version was released on March 23. It was released in standard and Disney Digital 3-D versions in the United States and in its standard version in the UK on March 30, 2007.

It is based on the characters and events in the illustrated book A Day with Wilbur Robinson, by William Joyce. The film originally had the same title as the book. The voice cast includes Jordan Fry, Harland Williams, Tom Kenny, Steve Anderson, Adam West, and Angela Bassett. The film is rated G by the MPAA.

THE REVIEW: PART: 1

The movie contains some important educational messages, such as not being afraid of failures since you can learn a lot from them, "always keep moving forward", and solving problems in an enlightened way instead of through revenge.

At times, all of us feel like strangers in the world. In Disney's bright, colorful, CGI animated film (available in 3D in some locations), Lewis (voice of Daniel Hansen) is left on the steps of an orphanage as a baby and rejected by over 100 prospective parents. He constantly invents machines that will help solve problems. But his love for inventing just seems to make him feel more separate from the world, more isolated, more weird.

It seems he will ever find a family or a place where he feels at home.

Mildred (voice of Angela Bassett), who runs the orphanage, is sympathetic and fond of Lewis, but that is not the same. He has a roommate, Michael "Goob" Yagoobian (voice of Matthew Josten), who is just as lonely as he is.

Lewis is better at understanding the problems of machines than he is at understanding what makes people work -- or not work. His head is so full of plans that he does not always see what is going on in front of him.

When he takes his latest invention to the school science fair, he does not notice that two very unusual people have taken an interest in it. One is "Bowler Hat guy," an even apter name than first apparent.

The other is a boy named Wilbur Robinson who says he is from the future and he needs Lewis to accompany him there right away.

Set in 2037 and 2007, Meet the Robinsons tells the story of Lewis (Jordan Fry) - a brilliant and creative twelve-year-old orphan with a surprising number of clever inventions to his credit. However, most of Lewis' inventions don't work yet, and they get in the way of his adoption efforts because of narrow minded would-be adopters who prefer someone less creative.

His latest and most ambitious project is the Memory Scanner, which lets people see their memories. The machine is supposed to help him find his birth mother so they can become a family. However, during the Science Fair where he tries to demonstrate it, the dastardly Bowler Hat Guy (Steve Anderson), a villain from the future, and his atrocious hat, DOR-15 (pronounced "Doris"), sabotage his invention.

The machine causes mayhem and Lewis runs to the orphanage roof top in frustration. While he is gone, the Bowler Hat Guy steals the invention. Lewis has all but given up hope when a mysterious stranger named Wilbur Robinson (Wesley Singerman) whisks our bewildered hero away in a time machine and together they fly into the future. Unfortunately, Lewis gets the idea to fly through time to meet his mother, and tries to drive the time machine. Wilbur objects and they fight.

The machine crashes and breaks on the grass of the Robinsons mansion, and Wilbur convinces Lewis that he must now repair it at the Robinsons Mansion, where Lewis also meets Wilbur's eccentric family and their music band of genetically enhanced singing frogs. Lewis gets attached to the family, and they even offer to adopt them. But when it is revealed that Lewis is from the past, the family says it's impossible for them to adopt him. Lewis runs away in frustration and joins the Bowler Hat Guy.

The Bowler Hat Guy reveals that Lewis is really Wilbur's dad, a famous inventor. The Bowler Hat Guy also reveals that he is actually Goob, Lewis's roommate from the orphanage. He tells Lewis of his terrible childhood after losing a crucial baseball game by falling asleep and blames it on Lewis, who worked every night on the Memory Scanner and made it hard for Goob to get sleep.

He also reveals to Lewis that Lewis himself at some time invented Doris (the hat) and then disabled it and locked it up in storage, but didn't know that the hat was still operational and escaped. The Bowler Hat Guy then locks Lewis up and then takes the Memory Scanner back to the past, where he tries to patent it and trick InventCo Inc. to mass produce hats like Doris. But the hats run out of control and the entire future (where Lewis is still locked up) changes to a dark world where the hats rule the world by mind-controlling everyone who wears them, making everyone behave like zombies.

Lewis succeeds to escape and repair the time machine just at the last moment before the hats destroy it, and goes back in time to stop the Bowler Hat Guy at Invent Co. He also decides there to never invent Doris, and the hat immediately dissipates into non-existence.

Lewis then takes the Bowler Hat Guy with him back to the future and shows him what Doris had caused, just as the ripple effect from the past is in the process of restoring everything back to normal. The Bowler Hat Guy realizes that Doris was not really his friend, and seeks forgiveness.

The Robinsons offer to take the Bowler Hat Guy in, but he can't bring himself to be taken in and runs off. Lewis then meets his future self, and sees his amazing inventions. Lewis understands that he has to go back to the past because none of this will exist if he does not go back in time and create it, but before he goes, his wife tells him to remember that she is always right.

Before taking Lewis back to where he belongs, Wilbur goes further back in time and lets Lewis see his real mother, keeping his earlier promise.

After Lewis goes back to his time, he wakes Goob up at the baseball field and Goob wins the baseball game, thus granting his roommate a far happier future.

He then goes back to the Science Fair and tries out his invention again. This time the memory scanner works, and he is adopted by the Science Fair judge and her husband, who he realizes are the grandparents in the future Robinsons family.

Just as he finishes the demonstration, the cute girl who has a display involving frogs tells him that she is always right, and he realizes that this is his future wife, Mrs. Robinson. In the end, Lewis knows that he will have a happy future, and gains confidence to keep moving forward in life.

The film is a joy in all regards and has qualities that will keep it on the minds of Academy Award nominators. It is best animated work so far this season in my opinion, and I enjoy animated. They are art form of their own.

Wilbur tells Lewis that his father looks like Tom Selleck, who happens to be the voice-actor.

In the German version, Wilbur says his father looks like Thomas Gottschalk, who happens to be the voice-actor in this version.

In the Latin American version Wilbur says his father looks like José Luis Rodríguez "El Puma".

The 3-D version is preceded by the 1953 Donald Duck/Chip 'n Dale short Working for Peanuts, which was originally made in 3-D.

THE REVIEW PART:2: Direction

I remarked earlier that enjoy animated films. There was a point in my life when I seriously considered becoming a cartoonist and worked at it diligently. My interest here and in the editorial cartoonists is in evidence within the various blog rooms. Walt Disney Animation did this one right.

Ever since they first distributed Pixar’s movies, Disney flicks they’ve made themselves have paled in comparison. But now with Pixar’s John Lasseter running the Mouse House operations, things have finally clicked with those the Disney folk. Meet the Robinsons mixes a heartfelt story, á la Pixar’s efforts, with extremely innovative 3-D animation. I am old enough to remember the days when they used to hand you those flimsy cardboard blue/red glasses and the screen would flash, “Put Your Glasses On!” just as something poked out at you.

Looking back on those days; most of the times, the effect wouldn’t even work very well. Not anymore. Robinsons first-time director Steve Anderson, along with Head of Story, Don Hall (who also provides some voices), were given free reign on this rather unprecedented process and make Meet the Robinsons’ whole newfangled digital 3-D technology truly an interactive experience.

If your are an aficionado of these sorts of things, hit the web and research this further as more is being written and posted daily.

Of course, once they get going with this stuff, it’s hard to stop, so some of Robinsons is almost TOO busy for some critics, but I like it all and the more the better unless it becomes merely a technical show off flick. To be sure there is some very good showing off, but it is not over done; it is not a distraction or detractor. It is fun and those critics who have to take pots shots just because they have the title…”critic” should be ignored on this one. Fun should be had by all.

Parents should know that the movie's themes include parental abandonment and rejection by potential adoptive parents, which may be disturbing for some children. There is some cartoon violence and peril, including a scary dinosaur. No one is badly hurt, though a child has a black eye and refers to having been beat up. There is some schoolyard language and a reference to being over-caffeinated.

Families who see this movie should talk about what it means to keep moving forward and to let go of the hurts of the past. Why did Lewis change his mind about what he thought he wanted? They may also want to talk about the many different ways people create families -- and about some of the more unusual hobbies of their family members.

Families who enjoy this film will also enjoy the book, A Day with Wilbur Robinson , by William Joyce. They will also enjoy the dazzlingly inventive graphics in another animated film about an inventor based on Joyce's work, Robots . The bowler hat guy is a little reminiscient of villain played by Terry-Thomas in Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or Jack Lemmon in the delightful Great Race .
